India recorded highest deaths by suicides in the year 2021. According to the most recent statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), there were 1,64,033 suicide deaths in India in total in 2021, a rise of 7.2% from 2020. Chapter 2 of the report by NCRB, which compiles data from police-recorded suicide cases, further states that more than 100,000 people in the nation die by suicide each year. According to a research published in the Lancet in 2021, “India records the largest number of suicide deaths in the world.”

The most union territories (UTs) recorded suicides were those in Delhi, the one with the most residents (2,840), and Puducherry (504). According to the research, 25,891 suicides were reported nationwide in the 53 largest cities in 2021.

Notably, more suicides recorded from the four major cities. Delhi (2,760), Chennai (2,699), Bengaluru (2,292), and Mumbai (1,436), together account for over 35.5% of all suicides reported from 53 megacities. According to the research, although Mumbai had a 12.0% increase (from 1,282 suicides to 1,436). Chennai saw an increase of 11.1% (from 2,430 suicides to 2,699 suicides). Bengaluru saw a rise of 4.4% (from 2,196 suicides to 2,292 suicides). Cases in Delhi reduced in comparison to 2021 over 2020.”

22,207 people committed suicide in Maharashtra in 2021. Maharashtra is the state with highest reported rate. Tamil Nadu came in second with 18,925 suicide cases. Madhya Pradesh with 14,965 cases followed, West Bengal with 13,500, and Karnataka with 13,056.

According to the research, these five states collectively accounted for 50.4% of all deaths in the nation.

And according to reports, domestic issues and illnesses were the main contributors to suicide deaths in the nation last year. They represented 33.2% and 18.6% of all suicidal cases, respectively.
