Thiruvananthapuram: India confirms its first death due to monkeypox. Monkeypox has started to raise serious concerns in India, approximately a month earlier India detected its first monkeypox case in Kerala and a suspected number of individuals are being taken into hospitals for treatment of the monkeypox disease, with four confirmed cases reported in India so far. On July 30, 2022, in the southern state of Kerala, monkeypox officially claimed its first victim in India.
His test was performed overseas, and the results weren’t made public to the authorities until July 30. His samples have now been delivered to the regional centre in Alappuzha of the National Institute of Virology for further verification.
Four cases have been recorded in Kerala and one in Delhi out of the five confirmed cases in India. All of the Kerala cases have a history of travel abroad, but the Delhi case does not have any travel history.
On May 21, the Union administration released recommendations for treating illnesses. As in the US, the government has not yet advised immunizing contacts of confirmed cases. In order to discuss local vaccination requirements, the WHO has recommended nations to arrange meetings of their respective technical advisory groups on immunization. The government of India has also been urged by specialists to consider immunizing the contacts of confirmed cases.
The death in India marks the fourth case of the disease outside of Africa. Before the first instance of this outbreak was recorded in the UK in May of this year, the disease was already endemic, or a disease that frequently occurs in a certain geographic area, in 11 western and central African countries.
On July 23, 2022, the World Health Organization deemed the epidemic a public health emergency of global concern. Over 90% of instances have been discovered in the MSM (men-who-have-sex-with-men) network globally. However, it has also not been ruled out that close contacts or family members could contract the disease through respiratory droplets.
Scientists are still looking for the particular mode this disease uses for transmission, and the experts have also advised not to ignore such signs the appearance of any inexplicable rashes on any region of the body, especially if a fever is present.
