On July 12, 2022, India recorded its first case of monkeypox. A man who had returned from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was symptomatic when he arrived in Kerala. According to State Health Minister Veena George, he was admitted to the hospital after showing symptoms of monkeypox and was found to be positive for the illness.

There are 11 major contacts

The National Institute of Virology in Pune has received the samples for additional verification. The patient had close contact with a positive case while he was in the UAE, but since returning to India, he hasn’t been in contact with many people, according to the state health minister.

“There are 11 primary contacts: his parents, the passengers who sat next to him on the aircraft, the taxi driver who drove him from Thiruvananthapuram to Kollam, the driver of the car that took him to the hospital, and the flight’s cabin crew. All of them are being informed”.
