The students must pass the qualifying examinations to study medical in India

No Special Provision for Ukraine Returned Medical Students. Those who have returned from Ukraine must have to pass qualifying exams in order to continue their studies in local medical colleges. There is no provision in the Indian Medical Council Act 1956 and the National Medical Commission Act 2019 to accommodate the students studying in any foreign medical institutions to Indian Medical Colleges.

Thousands of medical students who were studying in various colleges of Ukraine had to leave their courses in midway and return to India after Russia led the war against Ukraine. Since then, returnee students have been demanding admissions in the local medical colleges to the Government of India. Last month several students even sat on hunger strike at Jantar Mantar to protest. They also protested in front of the National Medical Commission (NMC) office in Dwarka and submitted a demand-cum-request letter to PMO, President of India, Education Ministry, Health Ministry and NMC.

On April 29, the Supreme Court of India had directed the NMC to frame a scheme in two months regarding the completion of clinical training of MBBS students affected by the Russia-Ukraine war and the pandemic

On Friday, the Central Government has said in the Lok Sabha that NMC has not permitted to accommodate returnee students into Indian Medical institutions. NMC regulates the medical education in the country, without its approval the government cannot take decisions regarding the admission of the returnee students. According to NMC, the returnee students have to comply with the Screening test Regulations 2002, or Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate, as would have been required in normal cases. They will not get any special treatment.  The students must pass the qualifying examinations to study medical in India.
