Loneliness, fear, and love, how often are these emotions portrayed in an unfiltered manner with a touch of rawness to them in Indian cinemas? “Mathilukal” is more than just a classic romantic film, the slow development of the story and the message it delivers that no matter where and how you are, a human always needs a companion, someone to they can depend on emotionally.
Unfiltered story line
Loneliness, fear, and love, how often are these emotions portrayed in an unfiltered manner with a touch of rawness to them in Indian cinemas? “Mathilukal (Walls)” directed by the renowned director Adoor Gopalakrishnan is no less than a masterpiece. This film stands out due to its unfiltered story line and strong characters.
Turn of events caught Basheer off guard
Basheer (Mammooty) the male lead character is very heart warming, he puts up a smile no matter what the situation is and deals with calmness. He served as an example of a kindhearted writer who became a political prisoner and was adored and revered by both prison staff and inmates. Because of his skill with language, he occasionally imparted spiritual enlightenment to everyone with whom he spoke.
But with the turn of events when Basheer thought he would be released, his name was, unfortunately, missing from the list. Things started to worry him. A man who once always talked about dealing with things with a smile had suddenly started to feel depressed. Basheer only had trees and squirrels to talk to.
Companionship and love
A sudden rush of joy starts blooming in Basheer’s life when Narayani (voiced by KPAC Lalitha) strikes up a conversation with Basheer, surprisingly being the only female character, it is just Narayani’s voice that you can hear throughout the film. Their relationship doesn’t take very long to develop. Their conversations are uncut, raw, and unfiltered. She represents to him the kind of freedom he can never find in the outer world.
From Gopalakrishnan’s commendable direction to Mammooty’s marvelous acting
“Mathilukal” is more than just a classic romantic film, the slow development of the story and the message it delivers that no matter where and how you are, a human always needs a companion, someone to they can depend on emotionally.
This film provides a unique angle by not revealing the face of Narayani but rather giving more importance to the conversations and character development of Basheer making the film stand out from the crowd. The dialogues that adhere closely to the novelette’s text, the excellent direction by Gopalakrishnan, and the detailed acting by Mammooty made this film worth watching. Don’t miss it.
