The LGBTQ+ Community is a group of people who deny to classify their gender and sexuality as per the prevailing societal norms. They don’t want to be known as ‘man’ or ‘woman’ rather something they feel like they are a part of. It includes the lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, queers, and many other such genders. There are numerous people who don’t fit into the society’s perception of gender and sexuality, out of which only a few of such types have been recognized and classified.

It feels relieved to say that we finally live in a world where one’s true identity is not just limited to the societal norms but also the way they see themselves.
In an interview -Annapurna Padhee, a 19 year old from Sambalpur, Odisha who came out as bisexual 2 years ago, mentioned that “the most challenging issue for people is to understand themselves and their bodies. At any point of time people may realize that they do not fit into the societal norm of being cisgender male or female.”
Usually, people discover about that in their teenage but sometimes people who have been identifying themselves as cisgender for their whole lives, may discover that they actually don’t feel belonging to that, they may realize it in their old age and regret about not discovering themselves earlier. So, it’s really important to understand your body and it’s needs.
The world is progressing day by day, people are learning to stand for their loved ones and support them when the so-called societal norms are against them.
Since the last few decades, we have seen a surge in the number of people who got famous and also belong to the LGBTQ+ community. Vikram Seth is an extremely popular novelist and poet, is also a bisexual. Atri Kar became the first transgender in India to sit for the Civil Services examination for which she had to fight a long battle as there were only two options under the category of gender i.e., male and female. Sabyasachi, a prominent fashion designer who has designed outfits for almost all of the Bollywood celebrities is also homosexual.
But even today there are people who do not accept the LGBTQ+ community with open heart instead try to make their lives miserable. Transgenders could be seen begging in trains and on roads for their survival as they do not get jobs to earn money and fulfill their basic needs.
Some families abandon their children after knowing about their sexuality. Teenagers who belong to the LGBTQ+ community are bullied and sometimes even manhandled at their schools and colleges. Even after facing such atrocities, they are being laughed at for choosing to be themselves.
Today when we talk about gender equality, it is not just about giving equal rights and opportunities to man and woman but also to other people who are neither man nor women, who choose to be themselves despite having to face various atrocities.
Gender equality means focusing on the uplifting of all the genders, in the constitution and also in the mindset of the people.
