India Ranked Lowest in Environmental Performance Index (EPI) for 2022, which was published on World Environment Day (180th). The 2022 Index that was published by researchers of Yale University and Colombia University has come to a conclusion for about 180 countries in relation to their environmental well-being, functionality, and climate science policy based on measures using a number of unreliable and inappropriate criteria. The EPI has taken into account of 40 indicators operating in 11 different issues. However the Indian Govt. opposed the Index Report
India had a score of 18.9, placing it in the bottom five of the list of 180 nations. India has been outranked even by Pakistan (176), Bangladesh (177) and Vietnam (178). The decline is significant because India was rated 168th out of 180 nations in the EPI-2020. The result was 27.6. Whereas the best performing countries include Denmark, UK, Finland, Malta, Sweden.
However, the index report has been opposed by the Environment Ministry. The Minister of State for Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey in a written reply in Lok Sabha said that “the Environmental Performance Index 2022 does not consider several important indicators of sustainable consumption and production. It read, the Index has drawn conclusions about countries with respect to their environmental health, ecosystem vitality and Climate Change related policy based on metrics with several parameters that are unscientific and subjective.”
It has also been noted that the EPI lacks clear policy recommendations and has weighing biases against countries with insufficient data, which has resulted in the neglect of environmental advancement in developing nations. India should examine the sectors where initiatives are still lacking in order to meet the ecological goals established for the long term, even if it is not happy with the report.

India is at the bottom of the list because to a number of major problems, including poor air quality and rising greenhouse gas emissions. The nation has also performed poorly on a number of metrics, including government performance, rule of law, and corruption control, according to Environmental Performance Index.
The EPI has been facing criticisms over the years for its arbitrary choice of metrics which could introduce bias and its poor performance as an indicator of environmental sustainability.
