Victim Blaming Ruled Justice; 98% Of Rapists Are Never Jailed

What is Feminism?

Feminism Needs A Different Meaning; down with victim blaming. India is well known for its adverse culture and diversity in the world. Undoubtedly, where it acquires a great space in the mindset of people out worldwide, it lacks in admitting/accepting the mentality of foreign countries, ironically this is what it adores at.

I might sound you silly, but I’ll try to keep my point in front of you. Indian society do differentiate between ‘her’ and ‘him’, I.e., women and men:

Situation-1

If a man does night shifts, he’s called ‘Hardworking’, but if a woman does night shifts, she is asked ‘What kind of work are you doing that it requires night shift?’

Situation-2

She earned a living (went office), cooked, cleaned, fed him and his family, while he only sat on the couch and relaxed. Why? The society only taught her that this was her duty and he’s only meant to give orders whenever at house or at work.

Situation-3

Society says be yourself and do not copy others. As she started to do things her way, her own self, she was opposed and said “No, not like this, see her son doing so good. Ask him what he did and do that.”

Situation-4

When a man beats and abuses his wife in public, people ignore and say ‘Leave them alone, it’s their personal matter.’ When a woman just screams in the public on her husband, people say ‘See her, how’s she making a scene. She’ll destroy our culture of keeping husbands’ respect. What vulgarity is it?’ Irrespective of the fact that the man might have caused harm or would have hurt her.

Situation-5

A girl in skirt got raped and blamed herself for wearing it. “No. It’s not your fault.”, said the girl in burkha. Here, it is pretty clear that provocative dresses are not needed to attract guys. It can be any piece of cloth. The point here stands that people won’t see the pain behind that the girl is facing. But will say many things to the girl and will not be much interested in finding out the boy. Mostly people here are concerned about their ‘Izzat’ that will get ruined if they approach court or police.

According to studies, in the year 2019, India had logged 438 such cases across states and Union Territories. This figure was 512 in 2018. It was lessened in the year 2020 due to complete lock down. Though indoor rape cases were reported and outdoor rape cases decreased.

For instance – in the year 2012, the ‘Nirbhaya’ case shook every Indian. Where a girl was raped by six people while travelling in a bus at midnight with her friend. The rapists included a juvenile. The victim, Nirbhaya was hit on her head with an iron rod after being raped and died due to several injuries.

Similarly, a boy molesting a girl is not seen by half the public, but even if a girl hugs her boyfriend at the roadside, each and every person standing or moving sees them.

According to a study:

  • 44% of rape victims are under the age of 18, and 80% are under the age of 30.
  • Approximately 98% of rapists are never jailed.
  • 90% rapists are known to the victim. Out of which 69% chances are of people within the family and the rest friends or acquaintance.

“The practice of self-blaming is not only caused by the victim blaming culture in our society. But also by the deeply rooted societal issues and broken principles of the male dominating societies.”

Feminism Advocates to stop victim blaming

India needs feminism because I don’t want society to tell me what a ‘real man’ or ‘real woman’ is? But I want to say that “Your identity is for you to choose, and not to compare yourself to others. “

Concluding this I would say that speaking up for women rights doesn’t make me a feminist but if people don’t like their rights to be taken away or questioned, they should not even try to do so.

Lastly, I would say that feminism is not empowering women right now in Indian. Because for a nation like Indian feminism has to be giving equal rights, salary, respect to women.
