Everything you need to know about Monkeypox: the rare viral infection. Monkeypox which is a rare viral infection was declared a Global Health Emergency in May 2022. It is a disease caused by the monkeypox virus. Animals and humans both can get infected by this virus. This is a self limiting disease which goes away on its own but recovery can take a bit longer. The symptoms of this disease are quite similar to that of smallpox such as fever, headache, rashes on your skin, etc. You can get it by coming in contact with an already infected person or animal.

In India there are not too many cases of monkeypox. However many other countries are struggling with this disease. According to the internet, 47,600 people are suffering from this virus.

Global Scenario

The Economic Times has reported that there are more than 17,000 people in US who have been suffering from this disease. The Government of USA has decided to invest 11 million dollars for the production of monkeypox vaccine whose production will begin later this year.

According to BBC, UK has also reported more than 3000 cases of monkey virus. A team at Oxford University is trying to make an antiviral drug that could help in speedy recovery of people suffering from monkeypox. The Oxford University team was earlier successful at making an antiviral drug for covid-19 called ‘tecovirimat’.  They have decided to run trials to see if tecovirimat would be successful to aid speedy recovery from monkeypox.

500 patients will take part in this trail. Tecovirimat twice a day will be given to some of them. And authorities will ask them to stay at home. dealing with the illness while others will receive dummy treatment. The scientists are hopeful that they will see the results in 2 months by comparing the results of both the teams.
