Everything that you should know about Viral Tomato flu. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported that more than 100 cases of tomato flu have been reported from Kerala, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Haryana. The Government of India has issued advisory to the states as the tomato flu tally crosses 100. Deriving its name from its main symptom- tomato shaped blisters on several parts of the body, Tomato flu/ Tomato fever is a viral disease. The infection was first reported in the Kollam district of Kerala. Now the disease has spread to Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Haryana.
A report by the regional medical centre in Bhubaneswar says that Odisha has reported 26 cases of tomato flu in children aged between 1-9 years. However, apart from the above mentioned states, there are no traces of this disease in other parts of India.

As the Indians were finally putting an end to the fight with COVID-19, new medical emergencies have emerged. After Corona virus, monkeypox was spreading in India and now it’s the tomato fever. Due to similarity in their symptoms, tomato flu is often mistaken monkeypox. Both of them are two different diseases caused by two different viruses.
Causes and symptoms:
Tomato fever is a variant of the Hand-foot-mouth disease which is caused by enteroviruses. It is a communicable disease which means you can get the disease if you come in contact with an already infected person. HFMD commonly infects children below the age of 10, however it can also infect adults with weak immune system.
Children are at a higher risk of getting infected as they play in unclean surfaces, put anything into their mouths, share toys, food and clothes.
The most common symptoms of this disease are high fever, rashes, red painful blisters that develop to the size of a tomato, skin irritation, joint pain. Other than these, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, fatigue are also some common symptoms.
Treatment and precautions:
It is a self-limiting disease and as of now there is no antiviral drug available that can cure tomato fever. If someone is infected then they can take supportive therapy of paracetamol and aspirin to help them to ease the symptoms. Infected person should be isolated for a week to stop the spread of this disease.
Since there is no drug available to cure this disease, precautions should be taken for the prevention from this disease especially for the children as they are more prone to get infected. Proper hygiene should be maintained and surroundings should be sanitized.
