The devastating earthquake

The country of Afghanistan was recently hard hit by a high magnitude earthquake on 22nd June which began at 2:24am. The earthquake hit the hilly region near the Pakistan Border. People were heavily affected due to this sudden earthquake. This news of earthquake is trending since.

As per reports from the news agency run by the state 1000 people were killed and 1500 people were badly injured. What caused so much destruction was the magnitude of the earthquake which spiked to a whooping 6.1 Richter Scale?

The poor villages of Afghanistan are the most affected by the quake

Afghanistan has a mountainous and rugged geography as it is with many unusual mountain ridges and in addition to that the construction of houses in the poor villages is not that strong either. Hence, when the earthquake hit with such high magnitude the poorly built houses could not stand it, and they fell to the ground.

The people inhabiting these houses tries to call the rest of the family and get out of the houses, but sadly there was not enough time for many which eventually led to so many casualties. In the Gayan District, a house came crashing down on a family of 15 people killing them in minutes.

With time the casualties should have decreased, but they did not. By the time the news of this devastating earthquake could even reach the capital Kabul, 90 people had already died.

The progress of rescue and recovery

The search for survivors has come to an end for the time being. A senior officer in Afghanistan said that the country does not possess adequate number of medical supplies to cure and treat the 1000 people who were injured because of the quake.

The geography of this country which is very rugged and poor communication has also hampered the process of getting help from other countries. Other than that, another obstacle for the country now is that many international aid agencies pulled themselves out of helping Afghanistan ever since the Taliban took over.

For the time being, supplies from Pakistan are on the way and Japan, South Korea, and UAE have planned to help the country. Talking about India, even though it does not have a very good and strong relationship with the Taliban it still sent 27 tons of supplies which would be sent to Afghanistan via the international agencies.
