The People’s Health Movement (PHM) strongly condemned the US Supreme Court’s recent overturning of the 1973 Roe v Wade ruling guaranteeing the constitutional right to abortion. The press statement released by PHM says-

As ardent supporters of reproductive justice, we extend our full solidarity to all the rights defenders and made-marginalized communities in the United States whose health and rights are impacted by this decision. We also recognize that the repercussions of this decision will likely reach far beyond US borders, and we will continue to act in solidarity as this long struggle continues.

People’s Health Movement

Abortion is healthcare and equitable access to safe, legal, and healthcare system-provided abortion must not be compromised under any circumstances. Access to healthcare is a human right, and the institutions and governments that fail to recognize and ensure access to abortion as essential healthcare are utterly abrogating their duties to uphold, protect, and fulfill human rights.

In recent years, abortion rights struggles globally have seen many victories but also setbacks. We take only strength from each of these struggles. We fully understand that abortion rights and reproductive justice encompass and reflect intersecting realities of – and our collective movements against – oppression on the basis of class, race, region, sex, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and sexual identity, among other categories. Indeed, we seek justice and equality on all of these fronts towards creating a more caring, inclusive world, free from discrimination.

PEOPLE’S HEALTH MOVEMENT

In any country, laws guaranteeing safe access to comprehensive abortion care alone are not sufficient to enable and ensure access to comprehensive abortion care for many people, including women, gender-diverse people, and other oppressed communities, who – owing to being subject to marginalization – face systemic barriers in accessing healthcare and services.

Challenging the patriarchal, racist, classist, and other biases within healthcare systems and policies at varied levels, across regions and countries, remains a critical aspect of our movement and activism. PHM commits to further strengthening these efforts as health activists, feminists, and rights defenders across the world. The assault on the bodily autonomy of women and queer community must be rejected outright. PHM remains committed, now more than ever, to advancing the agenda of reproductive justice, and reproductive and sexual rights towards realizing the collective dream of Health for All, said in the statement issued by PHM.
